SOTT day 22: Itโ€™s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night by @Polishedsolid

Day 22 of part 1 of the Sign “O” The Times themed #PrinceTwitterThread series: It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night by @polishedsolid.

Thanks @deejayumb for the wonderful introduction!๐Ÿ™
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Let's Get To it! ๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

๐ŸŽถ It's Gonna Be A Beautiful
It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night
U Got Your World Together
Everything's Lookin' Alright
Tonight There's No Tomorrow
This Is Gonna Be The One
Tonight We're Gonna Lose Our Sorrow
Tonight We're Gonna Have Some Fun๐ŸŽท
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Even though I am wholeheartedly aware that FUN is a core theme of Prince…๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

…it took me 30 long years AND a twin pandemic for these words to truly resonate with me! I understood the lyrics intellectually but I did not truly feel them.

Until NOW!

That's what great art does!
"Still Would Stand All Time!"

However, before we dive deep into "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" (IGBABN), we gotta talk about "Baby, I'm A Star" from Prince's Purple Rain for a hot second.

Why? It's IGBABN's prototype.

https://youtu.be/4YdPZ1J0KrE

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

"Baby, I'm A Star" is celebratory, joyous, uptempo, and declarative! So is IGBABN!

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Prince Performing GIF

"Baby, I'm A Star" closed out live shows on the Purple Rain Tour by always being the next to the last song ("Purple Rain").

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Prince Purple Rain GIF

IGBABN was always the closing song for the Sign O' The Times (SOTT) Tour. However, for the SOTT film, it was resequenced as the next to the last song before "The Cross," which @bobbyfriction covered yesterday for the #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread ๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค

I wish IGBABN would have remained the closer for the SOTT film. I like leaving a concert โฌ†๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ƒrather than โฌ‡๏ธ๐Ÿ™ƒ #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread ๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค

"Baby, I'm A Star" was recorded live on 3 August 1983 at First Avenue in MPLS. The concert was a benefit to raise $ for the Minnesota Dance Theatre and featured The Revolution! ๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

U should know this already, but just in case…
The Revolution are
Bobby Z. on drums
BrownMark on bass
Wendy Melvoin on guitar & vox
Lisa Coleman on keyboards & vox
Dr. Fink on keyboards

This is important for context later.

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Eventually, the live track of "Baby, I'm A Star" would be overdubbed for inclusion on the Purple Rain soundtrack released on 25 June 1984 and prominently featured in the accompanying film released on 27 July 1984.
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

IGBABN was also performed live by Prince & The Revolution at Le Zenith, Paris on 25 August 1986! The tune was created during a jam session for this particular concert's soundcheck.

Eric Leeds on sax

Eventually, IGBABN was overdubbed in Nov 1986.

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #PrinceTwitterThread

Live, Prince vamped "Baby I'm A Star" up!

Are you getting the pattern here?

Yes, but, "What is a vamp?!!" you ask.

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #PrinceTwitterThread

Prince Dancing GIF

Jazz Bassist Christian McBride describes the vamp in the documentary, Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown (2014): "Vamps were only used mostly in live performances if the vocalist wanted to talk to the audience and jive around…

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #PrinceTwitterThread

…Of course, in his live shows he [JB] vamped all the time, but nobody would ever think to go in the studio and record the vamp. You don't take a 2 bar phrase & repeat it ad nauseam & call that a song but that's exactly what James Brown wound up doing through that period." #SOTT

Oh man, did Prince ever vamp IGBABN live! However, NOT with The Revolution.

They disbanded less than a month after the show that birthed IGBABN. They only played 10 additional dates.

The Revolution's last show would be on 9 September 1986 at the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan, the final show of the Parade tour, as well as Prince's last performance with them.

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #PrinceTwitterThread

Coined by Harold Pride, "The Band With No Name" (also known as the SOTT/Lovesexy band) would inherit the song from The Revolution & make it their own. However in all fairness, the song did not have time 2 be nurtured by The Revolution. They only played it live a couple of times.

On the other hand, this LA Times Review "Video Music Awards Get Prince Lift" by Chris Willman from 14 Sep 1987 speaks to the "musical sophistication" of the new band as compared to The Revolution when talking about Prince's performance @ the Reseda Country Club after MTV awards.

The Band With No Name consisted of Drummer & Percussionist Sheila E. who often served as musical director if Prince wasn't present during rehearsals.

But back to "Baby, I'm A Star" for a minute. It's important that you understand my dislike of the song and how it colored my initial response to IGBABN.

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #PrinceTwitterThread

the revolution prince GIF

Upon first hearing "Baby, I'm A Star" at 13 yrs old, I bristled. What's this pop fluff? I don't want happy Prince. I want moody, funky, experimental, gospel, soulful, or quirky Prince. Yes, I was very opinionated even at that age.

https://youtu.be/smoMRzlVRyg?t=9257

#PrinceTwitterThread

Normally I could find something to hold on to live if I couldn't tolerate a Prince song on wax & I did…

It was an incredible vehicle for Sheila E. to do her thing. Seeing this video for the first time. I. LOST. MY. MIND. over Sheila, NOT Prince!
https://youtu.be/9Lgf2VU_M70?t=521
#SOTT

But Sheila couldn't save the song! Even live I thought "Baby, I'm A Star" was still too pop, too repetitive & towards the middle, devolving into noise. A voluminous number of band "hits" (Gimme 25! No, please don't!) & James Brown "Good Gods!"

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #PrinceTwitterThread

the revolution prince GIF

IF I wanted to listen to James Brown, I would listen to the original! Besides, Prince was the epitome of "original!" Why was he doing JB so hard?

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #PrinceTwitterThread

James Brown King GIF

So when I heard IGBABN w/ my sophisticated 16-year-old ears (Obviously, I'm joking here, but my listening is evolving!) my first impressions were not good due to all of the similarities to "Baby I'm A Star" noted above. I was like "Ugh! Here we go again."
#PrinceTwitterThread

Prince GIF

In all honesty, the "Oh We Oh, Oooh" probably had a huge part in my dislike of the song because my sister's favorite film was The Wizard of Oz. She was 7 and watched it religiously every day for months. I was tired of that chant.
https://youtu.be/rjBrkfX_XHw?t=13

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ–ค #PrinceTwitterThread

The only thing I looked forward to in the overdubbed version was hearing @jilldjones' outburst,
"Tonight there's No Tomorrow!" high in the mix!

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Wait what?&^%$#@#! @jilldjones is on this song. Yes! Jill is featured prominently in the song.
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Werk Sassy GIF

With all the talk about #SOTTSUPERDELUXE, once again, no one is talking about @jilldjones' contributions! She continues to be Prince's secret weapon, then, and now.

https://vimeo.com/272033575

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

If you read the credits, you would know. Liner notes are important.

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Music co-written by Dr. Fink & Eric Leeds. Finding co-writing credits on a Prince album is like mining for gold, extremely rare.

Lead guitar by Mico Weaver. Backing Vocals by Greg Brooks, Wally Safford, Jerome Benton & 6000 Wonderful Parisians.
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

After seeing the 1999 & Purple Rain tours, I realized that Prince's songs were even better live. The power of Prince live loomed SO large w/ me, that when the SOTT film came out on VHS I scrapped the album and recorded the film on cassette tape. ๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

To this day, when I want to listen to SOTT, I put on the film or listen to audio from the film…

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Prince Princetagram GIF

…with the notable exceptions of "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker," which @arrthurr brilliantly covered previously in this #PrinceTwitterThread series, & "Adore," that
@RichardCole_NOW will cover tomorrow,
as neither were in the film. #PrinceTwitterThread

I look(ed) forward to Boni Boyer's signature "One More" in the film version like I look(ed) forward to @jilldjones' contributions on the overdubbed version. Both are memorexed in my brain!

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

After listening or watching IGBYN from the SOTT film on repeat, I quickly realized that despite the similarities, IGBABN was a far superior tune to "Baby, I"m A Star."

https://soundcloud.com/grownfolksmusic/gfm-inside-the-album-podcast-prince-sott-pt-2-of-2#t=59:00

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

However, I began questioning this. Was I being seduced by the stunning 35mm print of the film or the incredible stage and lighting design by Leroy Bennett or the incredible, energetic choreography by Cat & Prince?

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Once I started trading tapes, I'd soon find out. I tried to find every single live show I could get my hands on by The Band With No Name!"
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Tape Mixtape GIF

If you hear rehearsals before the First Avenue SOTT band debut on 21 March 1987, IGBABN sounds closer to the album version, but, by the end of the year, the song transcended the "celebratory end of show" tune and became something else altogether.
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

How did this happen? Primarily, Prince's Vocal Cues! IF you've listened to a lot of Prince live shows, you know these vocal cues by heart. A hardcore Prince fan can play every cue their own darn self (even if only in their head ๐Ÿ˜‰
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

These vocal cues either lead to incredible horn lines or segues to different parts of the song or to other songs in his or other folks' catalogs.
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

However, the other reason is the malleability of the tune. IF you listen to different live recordings of the song, you'll get a deeper understanding of how pliable this song truly is.
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

You can go from Duke Ellington's Take The โ€˜Aโ€™ Train to Aretha Franklin's Chain of Fools to Madhouse's "Six" to James Brown's "Cold Sweat."
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Also, remember at its heart this song is a vamp.
The album version is ~9 min.
The film version ~8 min.
Remember these numbers.

Do you hear them? I do.

After more than 200 live performances for the SOTT & Lovesexy tour shows, rehearsals, and after-shows, there are more than a few IGBABN performances that really stand out, but we don't have time for all that. So, I'll share my top 3 live versions.

The definitive version is definitely the 31 Dec 1987 New Yearโ€™s Eve benefit concert at Paisley Park for several reasons. I could literally do another #PrinceTwitterThread on this show alone. However, I'll give you a CliffsNotes version instead.

I'm with Hamish @Hdub3121! The 17 June 1987 performance @ the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, Paris, France, clocking in at almost 13 min, is definitely 1 of the best versions of IGBABN "that I have ever heard, and Iโ€™ve heard a lot." #PrinceTwitterThread

We've already mentioned the "Jill Jones" Crawl from this 17 June 1987 Paris show. I wonder if she was in the audience. Were you @jilldjones? That alone is special to me. Mic drop.

Daily Show Mic Drop GIF

However, the specialness doesn't end there. Prince saying, "Me and my youngest boy, ALFRED!" in one of his old main voices cracks me up every time as he stresses both syllables, and

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค#SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Prince chanting "She, I Can't Resist" was generous. A nod to Jesse Johnson. That song is ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ.
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค#SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

In fact, all the 1987 Paris shows are special, but we ain't got time for ALLOVEM. However, It's crazy to fathom that Prince is back to Paris in less than a year after the original live recording of IGBABN.

Mind Blown Amazed GIF

My 3rd fav performance is an after-show during the Lovesexy tour on 3 Oct. 1988 (a.m.) at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC where the funk is elevated to "stank" status.

Was anybody there? I want to hear from YOU!

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค#SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Eric Leeds' sax solo is particularly stellar. This should speak volumes because his playing is always sublime.

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค#SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Levi Seacer Jr. is SO in the pocket when Prince says, "Junior, Play On It. Junior, Play On it…" Levi usually walks the bass, but this time around…

[I know BrownMark originated the bassline but Levi took that baton and ran with it.]

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค#SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

The other band directions that Prince gives that illicit the funk:

"Horns Swell. Put the Snare with That…"
Miko, Talk To Me… [FUNKY]
"Cold Sweat on the Horn!"

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค#SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

As time went on the song's tempo got faster. The faster tempos particularly resonated w/ me due to my love of high bpms in other forms of music like dubstep, jungle & drum 'n bass. Eric Leeds & Dr. Fink confirmed the song's tempo increase during #SOTTSDC

I am rarely interested in lyrical content, but I am obsessed with time. So, when Prince sings about time, I listen.

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค#SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

Matt Thorne @8minutesidle also recognized Prince's obsession with time in his #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread for Slow Love.

These words mean more to me now, more than ever.

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

To conclude, IGBABN is not a simple, pedestrian song. The Band With No Name made it sound easy, but it was far from it. Perhaps it was the dichotomy of the precision of practicing hour after hour after hour contrasted w/ their wild ability to improvise on a second's notice. #SOTT

Prince didn't play IGBABN much after the Lovesexy Tour. He did bring it back in 1993 for the Act II Tour during "America." He retained the horn cues ("Kick Some A$$") and would segue into "A Train," but it was N O T the same on multiple levels.

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

However, the key, missing link was Eric Leeds & Atlanta Bliss. On this tour, the Hornheads (Michael Nelson on trombone, Brian Gallagher on tenor saxophone, Kathy J. on baritone saxophone, Dave Jensen on trumpet, and Steve Strand on trumpet.) were too overblown in comparison IMHO!

In addition to the Hornheads, other members of the Act II band were Michael B. on drums, Sonny T. on bass, Levi Seacer, Jr. on guitar, Tommy Barbarella on keyboards, Morris Hayes on keyboards, and Maytรฉ as background dancer.

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

The song simply thrived w/ The Band With No Name!

I totally understand the experience Kurt Loder describes in "Prince in Europe: A Preview of His New Show Sign O' The Times" in Rolling Stone Magazine Issue 503, 02 July 1987, p. 61

๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

In Teresa L. Reed's book The Holy Profane: Religion in Black Popular Music, the groove "captures the soulful spontaneity of the Sanctified church & the animated exhortation of the Sanctified preacher…
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

[The groove] also emulates and incites an emotional intensity parallel to the Holy Spirit possession that is a trademark of the Sanctified worship service."
๐Ÿ‘+๐Ÿ–ค #SOTT #PrinceTwitterThread

The power of the groove is infectious.
You can live there forever.
And IGBABN is where I live.
